How to Check If AI Recommends Your Brand (for Free)

A step-by-step way to check your AI visibility, whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini name your brand when buyers ask for a recommendation, and what to do when they name a competitor instead.

Type your product category into ChatGPT and ask it to recommend a tool. There is a good chance it names a competitor and never mentions you. That single answer is now doing what a page-one Google ranking used to do, except most founders have no idea where they stand.

Checking your AI visibility means measuring, for the questions your buyers ask, whether the big AI answer engines name your brand, link to you, or hand the recommendation to someone else. Here is how to do it without paying for an enterprise seat.

Why AI visibility is worth checking now

People increasingly start a buying decision inside an assistant, not a search box. When someone asks “what is the best tool for X”, the model returns a short list of names. If you are not on it, you were never in the running, and unlike a search results page there is no scroll and no second chance.

The uncomfortable part: a brand can rank well in Google and still be invisible in AI answers, because the model reads from different signals. So classic SEO reports will tell you nothing about this. You have to check it directly.

Step 1: Write down the questions a buyer would actually ask

Do not test your brand name. Test the situation. Real prompts look like:

  • “Best [category] for [audience] in 2026”
  • “What tool should I use to [job your product does]?”
  • “[Competitor] alternatives”
  • “Cheapest way to [outcome]”

Ten to fifteen of these covers most of how a real buyer phrases the problem.

Step 2: Ask each engine and record three things

Run every prompt through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, and for each answer note:

  1. Named? Did the answer mention your brand at all.
  2. Linked? Did it cite or link your site (Perplexity and AI Overviews show sources).
  3. Who else? Which competitors it named instead, that is your real AI shortlist.

Doing this by hand across three engines and fifteen prompts is tedious and the answers drift between runs, which is exactly why a tracker helps.

Our free GEO Tracker runs your prompts across live AI search and reports, per question, whether you were named, whether the AI cited your link, your visibility odds, and which competitor it named instead. Three free checks a month, no card.

Step 3: Read the pattern, not the single answer

One answer is noise. The pattern across fifteen prompts is the signal. Look for:

  • A rival that shows up everywhere. They have earned entity trust the model repeats.
  • Questions where nobody in your space is named. Open ground you can take first.
  • Answers that link a listicle instead of a brand. Get onto that list and you inherit the citation.

Step 4: Fix the pages the AI reads from

AI answers lean on pages that state facts plainly, quote sources, and front-load a clear answer. If your page buries the answer under a story, the model skips it. Score a key page on those levers with our GEO Content Score, then rewrite the weak parts. We go deeper on this in how to increase your AI visibility.

How often to re-check

Monthly is enough for most brands. Models update, competitors publish, and your own fixes take a few weeks to show up in answers. Track the same prompt set each time so you are comparing like for like and can see the line move.

The whole point is to stop guessing. Ten minutes of checking tells you whether AI search is quietly sending your buyers to a competitor, and gives you a list of exactly which questions to win back.

Check whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini name you for the questions your buyers actually ask.
