Seven GEO Mistakes That Keep AI From Citing You

The most common GEO mistakes that stop ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI from citing you, plus the exact fixes so AI recommends you over rivals.

Most geo mistakes come down to one thing: your page is written for humans skimming, not for a model extracting a quotable fact. AI answer engines pull short, self-contained claims with clear attribution. If your best answer is buried three scrolls down, wrapped in a sales pitch, or missing from the page entirely, the model cites whoever said it plainer. Fix the seven below and you move from invisible to quotable.

Why does AI recommend a competitor instead of you?

Because the competitor made themselves easy to quote and you did not. AI does not rank ten blue links. It reads a handful of sources, extracts the cleanest sentence that answers the question, and names that source. When your page hides the answer, the model reaches for someone else's. That is the whole game, and every mistake here is a version of making yourself hard to quote.

The seven mistakes

  1. No direct answer up top. You open with a story or a definition dodge. Put the plain answer in the first two sentences, phrased so it stands alone if lifted out of the page.
  2. Claims with no numbers or sources. "We're the best" is unquotable. "Cuts setup from 40 minutes to 6" is a citation waiting to happen. Add specifics a model can attach to your name.
  3. Walls of text. Long unbroken paragraphs hide the extractable sentence. Use short paragraphs, headings in question form, and lists so each fact sits alone.
  4. Blocking AI crawlers. Your robots.txt or firewall quietly blocks GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot. If they cannot read you, they cannot cite you. Check this first.
  5. No structured data. Missing schema and no llms.txt means the model guesses what your page is about. Tell it plainly. See what is llms.txt.
  6. Stale, undated content. Models favor sources that look current. Add a visible update date and refresh thin pages.
  7. No entity presence off-site. If nothing outside your own domain mentions you, AI has no reason to trust the name. Get listed, quoted, and reviewed elsewhere.

How do you fix GEO mistakes fast?

Start with the two that cost nothing and block everything else: unblock the crawlers, then front-load a direct answer on your top three pages. Confirm access with a quick free SEO audit, then rewrite each page opening so the first paragraph answers the exact question in the title. Do that before you touch schema or backlinks. Access and a quotable answer are the floor.

Make every claim liftable

  • One idea per paragraph, answer first.
  • Attach a number, date, or source to each claim.
  • Write headings as the questions people actually ask.
  • End sections with a clean summary sentence a model can quote whole.

What to do this week

Pick your single most important page. Confirm AI crawlers can reach it. Rewrite the opening to answer the query in two plain sentences. Add one real number. Then score it and repeat. Once the basics hold, go deeper with how to get cited by ChatGPT and tune per platform from there.

GEO is not a trick. It is writing so clearly that a machine can hand your words to a stranger and name you as the source. Clear out these seven mistakes and you stop losing citations you already earned.
