How to Do Keyword Research Without Paid Tools

Do keyword research without tools using free sources like autocomplete, People Also Ask, and AI answers. A real step-by-step process for indie founders in 2026.

You do not need a paid tool to do keyword research. You need a source of real queries people type, a way to sort them by intent, and a system to track which ones you actually rank for. Free tools give you all three if you know where to look. Here is the exact process I use, using nothing but a browser and a few free tools.

Can you do keyword research without tools?

Yes. Every paid platform is just repackaging data that already leaks out for free: autocomplete suggestions, related searches, forum questions, and your own search console. The gap is not access. The gap is knowing which signals matter and how to organize them. A cheap tool automates the collection. You can do the collection by hand in an afternoon.

Start with what real people type

Seed keywords come from your head. Expansion comes from real search behavior. These free sources give you the actual phrases:

  • Google autocomplete: type your seed and read every suggestion. Then add a letter (a, b, c) after it to force more.
  • People Also Ask: the accordion questions on any results page. Each one is a keyword with clear intent.
  • Related searches: the block at the bottom of the results page.
  • Reddit and forums: search your topic plus site:reddit.com. The way people phrase problems is your long-tail goldmine.
  • Amazon and YouTube search boxes: buyer-heavy and creator-heavy autocomplete that Google will not show you.

Collect 50 to 100 raw phrases into a plain spreadsheet. Do not filter yet. Volume of ideas first, judgment second.

How do you know which keywords are worth it without volume data?

Paid tools sell you search volume numbers. Here is the uncomfortable truth: for a small site, volume matters less than intent and difficulty. A keyword with 90 searches a month that you can actually rank for beats a 10,000 search term you will never crack. Sort your list by intent instead:

  1. Buyer intent: words like buy, best, vs, alternative, pricing, near me. These convert.
  2. Problem intent: how to, why, fix, error. These build trust and traffic.
  3. Research intent: what is, guide, examples. Top of funnel, slower payoff.

Prioritize buyer and problem intent when you are small. They pay the bills faster.

Gauge difficulty for free

You do not need a difficulty score. Open an incognito window and search the keyword. Look at page one:

  • Are the results big brands only, or are there forums, small blogs, and weak pages? Weak pages mean an opening.
  • Does the title match the query exactly, or is Google settling for loose matches? Loose matches mean nobody nailed it yet.
  • Is there a featured snippet you could win with a cleaner answer?
Doing this by hand for 100 keywords is slow. The free Keyword Finder does the expansion, groups by intent, and flags long-tail openings in one pass. Paste a seed, get a sorted list you can act on today.

Why AI search changes your keyword list

Here is what most keyword guides miss in 2026. People no longer only type into Google. They ask ChatGPT and Perplexity full questions, and the AI names a few sources in its answer. If the AI recommends a competitor instead of you, that traffic never even reaches a results page. So your keyword research now has a second job: find the questions AI answers about your topic, and make sure your page is the one it cites.

Practically, that means capturing full-sentence questions, not just short phrases. Then check whether you show up when those questions get asked. You can check your AI visibility for a given query and see who the models name instead of you. For the query side of this, long-tail question keywords matter more than ever because they match how people talk to AI.

Put it into a simple system

Research is worthless if it sits in a spreadsheet. Turn it into a loop:

  1. Pick 5 keywords with clear intent and a weak page one.
  2. Write the single best page for each. Answer the exact question in the first two sentences.
  3. Track your position over time so you know what is working. A free rank tracker tells you which bets paid off.
  4. Every month, mine your search console for queries you already rank on page two for. Those are your fastest wins.

The whole thing, free

Keyword research without paid tools is not a downgrade. It is the same raw data, collected with more attention. Autocomplete for phrases, People Also Ask for intent, incognito searches for difficulty, and AI answers for the questions that now bypass Google entirely. Start with a seed, expand it, sort by intent, and ship the pages nobody wrote well yet. Then track and repeat.

Turn one seed into hundreds of real long-tail keywords, free.
