How to Structure H1 and H2 Headings for SEO

Learn how to structure H1 and H2 headings for SEO the right way. One H1 per page, question-based H2s, logical order, and a clear hierarchy AI can read.

Use one H1 per page that states the main topic, then break the body into H2 sections that each answer one clear question. Keep the order logical, put your primary keyword in the H1 and at least one H2, and never skip levels. That structure is what both Google and AI answer engines read to decide what your page is about and whether to quote it.

What is H1 and H2 heading structure for SEO?

Headings are the skeleton of your page. The H1 is the title of the whole thing. H2s are the main sections under it. H3s are sub-points inside a section. Search engines and language models walk this outline to understand hierarchy, the same way you skim a table of contents before reading a book.

When the outline is clean, a machine can pull one section and cite it as a self-contained answer. When it is messy, your page reads as one undifferentiated blob and gets skipped.

The core rules for H1 and H2 tags

  1. One H1 per page. It names the single topic. Two H1s tell a crawler you have two competing subjects.
  2. Put the primary keyword in the H1, near the front, written for a human. Not stuffed.
  3. Use H2s for main sections, and phrase some as the question a reader would type.
  4. Do not skip levels. H1 to H2 to H3, in order. Never jump from H1 straight to H3.
  5. Front-load the answer under each H2 so the first sentence works as a standalone quote.

How do you order H1 and H2 headings on a page?

Order by how a reader thinks, not by how you wrote it. A strong pattern for most pages:

  • H1: the exact topic, with the keyword.
  • H2: what it is (definition).
  • H2: why it matters or the core rules.
  • H2: how to do it (steps).
  • H2: common mistakes.
  • H2: a short FAQ using real question phrasing.

Each H2 should make sense on its own. If you read only the headings, top to bottom, they should tell the whole story.

Why question-based H2s win with AI answers

AI search tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity build answers by matching a user's question to a passage that already reads like an answer. An H2 written as a question, followed by a direct reply in the first line, is exactly that passage. A vague heading like "Overview" gives the model nothing to match.

This is where most pages lose. If your headings are generic, the AI grabs a clearer competitor's page and recommends them instead of you. Tight question-based H2s are how you get pulled into the answer. More on that in how to get cited by ChatGPT and answer engine optimization.

Common heading mistakes to avoid

  • Styling text bold or large to look like a heading instead of using a real H2 tag. Crawlers read the tag, not the size.
  • Keyword-stuffing every heading with the same phrase. Vary it naturally.
  • Using H1 for your logo or site name. Save the H1 for the page topic.
  • Skipping from H2 to H4 because H4 looked smaller. Fix the styling, not the hierarchy.
  • Writing headings that describe your structure ("Section 2") instead of the content.

Do this next

Open one important page and read only its headings. If they do not tell the full story in order, rewrite them into a clean H1 plus question-based H2s. Then confirm the fix with a free SEO audit and check whether AI tools actually mention you in how to check AI visibility. Good structure is the cheapest ranking win you have. Most pages get it wrong, so getting it right is an edge.
